Lunar Calender - 5th May - Duan Wu Jie

In Lunar Calendar, 5th May is the dumpling festival. Dumpling festival also known as dragon boat festival. In this festival, chinese comunity organize dragon boat races and eat dumplings, or 'zong zi'.

This festival has a story behind it. Long time ago, in China, the patriotic poet Qu Yuan threw himself in to the Milo River to protest against injustice and corruption in China. Some villagers want to protect Qu Yuan's body from eaten by the fishes in the river, they threw rice and beat drum to chase the fishes away. This is the why every chinese family will make 'zong zi' on fifth day of fifth month of lunar calendar.

Nowadays, most of the youngest do not know how to make a dumpling.The dumplings, or 'zongzi', is a little packets of sticky rice wrapped up in bamboo leaves.


These are the ingredients to make the dumplings:

rice, leave and meat


we need to wrap the rice and meat with the bamboo leaves. Then, we have to cook it with boiling water.

In market, there got many types of dumplings. In Melaka, there has nyonya dumplings, Hainan dumplings, sweet dumpling, etc.
